Wellfleet was founded in June of 1763, the name is thought to have come from "Whale Fleet". Before Wellfleet was incorporated it was a part of Eastham referred to as Billingsgate. It is now known as the "Art Gallery Town", and the source for famous Wellfleet oysters.
